How Gossip Girl Star Thomas Doherty Got Ready For His First Met Gala

The thing about the Met Gala, also known as Fashion’s Biggest Night, is that not only is it one of the most photographed events on the planet, but there’s also a theme. And theme parties, as we all know, carry a particular stress when deciding what to wear (do you go all out, play it safe or fall somewhere in the middle?). Add in hundreds of photographers and a red carpet packed with A-list celebrities and the creme de la creme of the fashion world and, well, you get the picture.

But Thomas Doherty, Gossip Girl star and new Dior Beauty ambassador, wasn’t feeling stressed as he prepared for the Gala at the Pierre Hotel in New York City—even though it was his first time attending. “I told my parents I got invited to The Met and they said, Oh that’s amazing. What’s the Met?” he laughs. “But I’m excited. It’s a really cool opportunity to be surrounded by artists from all different genres of the creative spectrum, it’s going to be sick!”

This year’s Gilded Glamour theme—a reference to the Gilded Age and a tie-in to the exhibit “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”—might seem like a difficult era to interpret, but not for Doherty. “I think the aesthetic of that era, for men’s clothing, is stunning,” he says. “The tailoring was so beautiful. Honestly, I wish we always dressed like that.” It also doesn’t hurt that his custom look by Dior Men’s artistic director Kim Jones harkens back to all the best things about the era, from the cropped jacket and ascot down to his sleek, classic grooming look. “I feel like a million bucks, like Prince Charming,” Doherty says.

So, how did it all come together? Here’s a peek behind the scenes.

“Working with Kim is such an honor and was quite collaborative. We got a lot of the fabric samples and I got to pick different materials and colors, and he put everything together. The man’s a genius. It was a kindness for him to even allocate me an opinion.”

“I use the Dior Sauvage Face & Beard Moisturizer every day after I shave. It’s not too thick or heavy on your skin. I’m someone that can be prone to breaking out if the moisturizer is too thick, but this light, but still very moisturizing.”

The inspiration for Doherty’s Gilded Age grooming look was Jack from Titanic, specifically “when he attends the First Class dinner on the ship,” says groomer Megan Lanoux. “He looked so sophisticated and well-groomed and his hair was slicked back and clean.”

“The look is very classic, but it has these Dior touches,” says Doherty. “The cut of everything is so beautiful and so clean, but we’ve also got little splashes of something a bit more modern with the jewelry. I think it’s very on theme.”

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be working so closely with Dior on something like this. It’s been such an honor. I’m definitely feeling a Prince Charming vibe.”

Get the Look

Want to get Doherty’s classic look? Here’s how to look just as “dapper, sleek, and well-groomed,” straight from his groomer Megan Lanoux.

  1. Cleanse your skin with Dior La Mousse OFF/ON Foaming Cleanser. “It doesn’t strip your skin like other cleansers and leaves it feeling hydrated and gives your skin a little plumpness.”
  2. Follow with Dior Sauvage Face & Beard Moisturizer to hydrate the skin without leaving it looking oily. “Lots of moisturizers leave your skin with a little glow, but that’s not great for the red carpet because you don’t want it to look oily. This moisturizer just makes you look hydrated.”
  3. Use Dior Backstage Face & Body Flash Perfector Concealer under and around your eyes then blend it out toward your jawline and hairline with a sponge. “Most of the coverage will stay around your eyes where you need it but you won’t look like you’re wearing makeup.”
  4. Spot treat with Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation. “Use it to cover blemishes or anything that’s red or dark like broken capillaries. Use a sponge or brush to blend it over spots you want to cover, but not all over your face.”
  5. Finish with a hit Dior Backstage Face & Body Powder-No-Powder. “This powder lightly mattifies but looks like a second skin. It won’t get cakey or heavy or make you look flat.”
  6. Hit your lips with Rouge Dior Lip Balm #000 Natural. “It’s very matte but very hydrating, so it just enhances your lips and makes them look very natural.”
  7. If needed, fill in spotty brows with Diorshow Brow Styler. “It’s a very fine pencil so you are able to create a hair effect rather than overfilling a brow. It looks more natural.”
  8. For a modern take on the classic slicked back look, make sure your sides are cleaned up and tight. Then “add some volume on the top rather than just slick it down.” Spray Kevin Murphy Antigravity Spray on damp hair then use a round brush and blow drier to create some volume on top.
  9. Use some Oribe Fiber Groom Elastic Texture Paste to slick the sides as tight as possible. Then use a little bit more on top to smooth it out and lock it in place.
  10. Finally, hit your hair with a double shot of spray. “I used Oribe Airbrush Root Touchup Spray in Dark Brown to make everything look the same dark brown color, then Balmain Hair Couture Session Spray on the sides to lock it all in place.”
